Matthews' American armoury and blue book
A heraldic reference compiled by John Matthews of London and printed for the editor in 1907, registering coats of arms borne by American families for genealogists and armigerous subscribers. Hundreds of small line-block shields appear with crests above a torse bar, drawn in flat black on white with hatching and no tinctures: griffin and boar heads, chevrons, bends, escallops and cinquefoils, usable as compact emblems, spot ornaments or silhouette stock.
