Mécanique céleste
Nathaniel Bowditch's annotated English translation of Laplace's Mécanique céleste, printed in Boston in 1829 for mathematicians and astronomers studying orbits, tides and capillary action. The plates are line diagrams set into the text: lettered points, tangents, arcs, ellipses and dropped perpendiculars drawn in thin engraved rule, useful as geometric scaffolding, abstract linework, or figure-numbered marginal ornament.
