The mechanistic conception of life : biological essays
Jacques Loeb's collected biological essays, published by the University of Chicago Press in 1912, argued a mechanistic account of life for scientists and educated general readers. The 42 figures are line drawings of sea-urchin eggs and early cleavage stages — stippled spheres inside concentric membranes, labelled with letters and dashed leader lines — useful as simple circular diagrams, dot textures, and annotation conventions.
