Memoirs
Volumes of the Memoirs of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Boston learned society's scientific papers issued from 1783 onward for members and research libraries. The plates here are halftone photographs of human brain specimens — whole hemispheres, midsagittal views, and coronal slices with cavities and lesions — each ranged beside a centimetre rule and keyed with roman plate numbers, some floated on black grounds that turn the tissue into pale silhouettes.
