Memorials of Christie's : a record of art sales from 1766 to 1896
A two-volume history of the London auction house Christie's, compiled by bibliographer William Roberts and published by G. Bell and Sons in 1897 for collectors, dealers and art-market historians. The plates are sepia photographs of sale-room objects — Louis XV and XVI marquetry commodes, tapestry-covered settees, carved pediments with profile medallions — isolated against dark grounds with soft studio shadows.
