Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's memoirs on growing madder and milling the root into dye powder, translated from French by order of the Real Junta General de Comercio and printed by Joaquín Ibarra in Madrid in 1763 for growers, dyers and officials. The folding copperplate engravings are lettered mechanical diagrams: cogwheels and lantern pinions, braced timber mill frames, stamping mills in elevation and section, all built from fine parallel hatching with scale bars and figure numbers usable as machine-part vocabulary or diagram ornament.
