Michaelis Majeri ... Secretioris naturae secretorum scrutinium chymicum : per oculis et intellectui accuratè accommodata, figuris cupro appositissimè incisa, ingeniosissima emblemata, hisque confines, & ad rem egregiè facientes sententias, doctissimaque item epigrammata, illustratum ..
A 1687 Frankfurt reissue of Michael Maier's alchemical emblem book, with fifty copperplates by Matthäus Merian paired with Latin mottoes and epigrams for learned readers of chymical philosophy. The small engravings set laboratory work, mythological figures and mercurial monsters in open landscapes with walled towns and rocky hills, drawn in fine parallel hatching: useful for allegorical figures, furnaces and tools, and compact emblem frames.
