The microscope and its revelations
A microscopy manual and natural-history survey by William Benjamin Carpenter, revised by W. H. Dallinger and issued in Philadelphia in 1901 for students, physicians, and amateur microscopists. Engravings and lithographic plates mix white-on-black crystal and polarization figures with fine-line anatomical diagrams of mites and rotifers and circular field-of-view plates of protozoa and spermatozoa, giving designers ready-made roundels, labelled cutaways, and stippled textures.
