The microscope, or Descriptions of various objects of especial interest and beauty
A popular microscopy handbook written by Mrs. F. Marshall Ward and published in London by Groombridge and Sons in 1869, aimed at amateurs working a microscope at home. The plates are hand-tinted figures of magnified specimens — moth-wing scales with ribbed cellular texture, tissue and mineral fragments — grouped on a page under numbered caption lists, useful as repeating organic pattern, isolated silhouettes, and muted period colour.
