Minerva Britanna Or A Garden Of Heroical Deuises, furnished, and adorned with Emblemes and Impresa's of sundry natures
Henry Peacham's English emblem book, printed in London in 1612 for courtiers and gentlemen readers, pairs 264 woodcut devices with mottoes and verse. Each cut sets a compact allegorical scene—a burning candle held aloft, a hand emerging from cloud, a bear climbing a tree—inside a heavy ruled panel and a different foliate border of scrolls, grotesque terms, birds and flowers.
