Modern French masters
A 1904 survey of contemporary French painters written by the American novelist Marie Van Vorst and published in Paris by Brentano's for English-reading art buyers and gallery-goers. The plates are coarse-screen halftone reproductions of oil paintings — standing women in pale gowns, heads emerging from near-black grounds, a riverbank crowd — with French titles set in small caps beneath; useful for smoky tonal gradients, high-contrast face-against-dark vignettes, and painterly figure silhouettes.
