Modern illustration
A survey of contemporary book and periodical illustration written by the American etcher and critic Joseph Pennell, published by G. Bell in London and New York in 1895 for artists, students, and publishers learning reproductive processes. The 179 plates reproduce work by illustrators such as E. J. Sullivan alongside wood engravings and process blocks, offering dense pen-and-ink crosshatching, figure groups in Victorian interiors and streets, and captions crediting the originating newspaper or magazine.
