Monas hieroglyphica Ioannis Dee, Londinensis, ad Maximilianvm, Dei gratia Romanorvm, Bohemiae et Hvngariae regem sapientissimvm
John Dee's Monas hieroglyphica, a Latin treatise on alchemical and cabalistic symbolism addressed to Emperor Maximilian II, reprinted at Frankfurt in 1591 for learned readers. The woodcuts are small black diagrams: planetary sigils, the composite monad glyph, nested ovoid shells with dotted arcs, and numbered geometric constructions of intersecting curves, usable as occult marks and schematic line ornament.
