Filippo Picinelli's Mondo simbolico, printed in Milan in 1653 by the Archiepiscopal press, is an encyclopedia of emblems and devices with Latin mottoes and commentary drawn from sacred and secular sources, compiled for preachers, writers and designers of imprese. The plates are engraved oval medallions of birds, beasts and heavenly bodies set in cartouches of fruit swags, masks, scrollwork and mermen, alongside woodcut initials with lions and serpents.
