Monstres
Essays on art and aesthetics by the French critic Jean Dolent, issued in Paris by Alphonse Lemerre in 1896 for a literary readership, with a frontispiece by the painter Eugène Carrière. Contents mix hard-line woodcut ornament — a grotesque mask flanked by winged chimeras and bead-and-rosette garlands, a nude digger under the motto FAC ET SPERA — with Carrière's smoky tonal lithograph of a head emerging from darkness.
