Moral emblems, with aphorisms, adages, and proverbs, of all ages and nations
An 1860 London edition of Jacob Cats's and Robert Farley's emblem books, redrawn and designed by John Leighton after Adriaen van de Venne, issued by Longman for Victorian readers of proverb and emblem literature. Wood-engraved roundels hold seventeenth-century Dutch scenes—courting couples, tree-lined streets, waterside birds, guttering candles—inside square corner ornaments and banners lettered with Latin mottoes and English translations, supplying ready-made frames, cartouches and motto plates.
