Mother Goose comes to Portland;
A 1918 collection of caricatures by Frederic William Freeman, printed by the Southworth Printing Company in Portland, Maine, pairing local businessmen and officials with Mother Goose rhymes for a hometown readership. The pen-and-ink drawings give each sitter an oversized head on a small body, set against hatched backgrounds with props like oversized mallets, houses, brick walls and running deputies; useful for period suit-and-tie figures, lettered signboards and economical crosshatch shading.
