Mundi lapis Lydius, oder, Der Welt Probier-Stein : das ist, Emblematische Sitten-Lehren
An emblem book of moral instruction, Antoine de Bourgogne's Latin verses reworked in German with engravings by Johann Ulrich Krauss, printed by Johann Jacob Lotter in Augsburg in 1712 for pious and educated burgher readers. The 52 plates are small oval copperplates set in ruled frames, showing craftsmen's shops, paneled rooms with coffered ceilings and tiled floors, gateways and cobbled streets in steep perspective, with figures in plumed hats and slashed doublets; useful for period costume, architectural interiors, and the oval cartouche format itself.
