Mundi lapis lydius, siue, Vanitas per veritat falsi accusata & conuicta

Bourgogne, Antoine de, 1593 or 4-1657, Pauli, Andries, 1600-1639 · 1639 · Antuerp : Typis Viduæ Ioan. Cnobbari · 75 pictures

A Latin emblem book by the Flemish cleric Antoine de Bourgogne, printed in Antwerp in 1639 by the widow of Jan Cnobbaert, with copperplates by Andries Pauli, addressed to educated readers moralizing on worldly vanity. The 77 engravings sit inside ruled oval or octagonal borders and show paneled interiors with carved fireplaces and leaded windows, overgrown brick ruins, and villagers with carts and dogs, all built from fine parallel hatching that yields cut-out framed vignettes, period costume, and furniture detail.
