A Latin emblem book by the Bruges canon Antoine de Bourgogne, engraved by Andreas Pauli and printed in Antwerp in 1639 by the widow of Jan Cnobbaert, aimed at educated readers taking moral instruction from images and mottoes. The 72 plates are small etched scenes set in oval or octagonal frames with beaded and strapwork borders, showing ruined masonry, flat landscapes with distant towers, kitchen and workshop interiors, and animals such as boar and cattle, useful for vignette frames, architectural ruins and figures at work.
