A popular history of alchemy and early pharmacy by Charles John Samuel Thompson, published in London by the Scientific Press in 1897 for general readers and members of the pharmaceutical trade. The plates are line redrawings of early woodcuts: robed physicians holding urine flasks, an apothecary pounding a mortar at a plank table, a bearded alchemist with a flaming torch among retorts and furnaces \u2014 clean black outline on cream, easy to cut out and scale.
