My story of the war: a woman's narrative of four years personal experience as nurse in the Union army, and in relief work at home, in hospitals, camps, and at the front, during the war of the rebellion
Mary Livermore's 1889 memoir of her four years as a Union army nurse and Sanitary Commission relief worker, published for a general American readership by A. D. Worthington of Hartford. The forty-three images here are decorated chapter initials cut in black letterforms wrapped with foliate scrollwork, acanthus, flowers and small grotesque heads, usable as drop caps or ornament units.
