A multivolume scholarly history of America edited by Justin Winsor, published in Boston and New York by Houghton, Mifflin in 1884 for libraries and historians of exploration. Illustrations are wood-engraved facsimiles of early maps, portolan coastlines, sea monsters and wind roses, plus ruins and artifacts drawn from life, supplying line-only cartographic ornament and reproducible period lettering.
