Narrative and critical history of America
Justin Winsor's eight-volume Narrative and Critical History of America, issued by Houghton, Mifflin in Boston and New York from 1884 for scholars and collectors of early Americana. The plates are line-engraved facsimiles of early maps, town plans and harbour surveys, with hatched shorelines, stippled water, tiny block-by-block building footprints, sailing ships, fortification bastions and hand-lettered street names — useful for period cartographic textures and lettering.
