A national museum of design
A Smithsonian Institution report of about 1900 on establishing a national museum of design, drawing on the Cooper-Hewitt collections and addressed to museum trustees, educators, and working designers. Halftone plates show close-up details of ornament: lustreware pottery scrolls and split-palmette foliage, a printed floral border with fringe, and near-abstract blotted tonal fields useful as pattern fragments and textures.
