Hoffer, Adriaan, 1589-1644, Passe, Crispijn van de, ca. 1565-1637 · 1635 · t'Amsterdam : By Broer Jansz. · 34 pictures

A Dutch-language emblem book of verse by the Zeeland magistrate Adriaan Hoffer, printed by Broer Jansz in Amsterdam in 1635 with engravings from the Crispijn van de Passe workshop, addressed to literate Protestant readers who read mottoes and moral couplets together. The plates are round engravings set in square blocks, each holding a Latin motto, a Dutch rhyming couplet and a scene of village steeples, vine-wrapped trees, brick farmyards or a gabled town street; designers can lift the circular frame-in-square format, the fine-hatched cloud and foliage textures, and the ornamental woodcut initials.
