Needlework as art
A survey of historic embroidery by Lady Marianne Alford, published in London in 1886 for collectors, museum students and needleworkers. Plates mix counted cross-stitch charts with lettering, engraved views of Spanish gold-thread altar frontals, scrolling acanthus borders, and photographic hexagonal panels of embroidered birds, giving designers grid patterns, repeat borders and ornamental frames to trace.
