A new elucidation of colours, original, prismatic, and material : showing their concordance in three primitives, yellow, red, and blue, and the means of producing, measuring, and mixing them : with some observations on the accuracy of Sir Isaac Newton

Sowerby, James, 1757-1822 · 1809 · London : Printed by Richard Taylor and Co. · 6 pictures

James Sowerby's 1809 London treatise arguing that yellow, red and blue are the three primitive colours, published by Richard Taylor for painters, chemists and readers debating Newton's optics. Hand-coloured engraved plates set stepped black bars and measuring scales against fine colour gradients, striped binary mixtures and a hazy sun with prismatic halo — useful for chart geometry, ruled colour bands and atmospheric washes.
