The New-England primer; a history of its origin and development; with a reprint of the unique copy of the earliest known edition and many facsimile illustrations and reproductions

Ford, Paul Leicester, 1865-1902 · 1897 · New York : Printed for Dodd, Mead and co. · 44 pictures

Paul Leicester Ford's 1897 bibliographic history of the New England Primer, printed for Dodd, Mead in New York, reprinting the earliest known edition in facsimile for collectors and historians of American printing. Plates reproduce crude relief-cut alphabet blocks, rhyming couplets set in tiny type columns, framed animal cuts, and scenes of martyrdom, useful as coarse-grained woodcut motifs and grid layouts.
