A new history of painting in Italy : from the II to the XVI century
Crowe and Cavalcaselle's multi-volume survey of Italian painting from the second to the sixteenth century, reissued in London and New York in 1908 for art historians, students and collectors. The 105 plates are halftone photographs of frescoes and panel paintings — enthroned Madonnas under canopies, kneeling angels, lamentation groups, carved architectural frames — many faded or damaged, giving soft grey tonal fields and worn surface texture.
