A new treatise on the practice of navigation at sea : containing all the details necessary to enable the mariner to become a good practical navigator : illustrated by a new mode of engraved diagrams and figures
A self-published navigation manual by William Thoms, printed for the author in New York in 1861, teaching merchant seamen practical navigation and nautical astronomy through engraved diagrams and figures. The single indexed plate is the Essex Institute's circular ownership seal: a flaming oil lamp radiating straight rays above a row of shelved books, ringed by letterpress capitals and the dates 1821-1836-1848, useful as a roundel, badge, or emblem template.
