Nineveh and Babylon; a narrative of a second expedition to Assyria during the years 1849, 1850, and 1851
Austen Henry Layard's account of his 1849–51 excavations at Nineveh and Babylon, published for British readers by John Murray in 1867. The line engravings copy Assyrian palace reliefs and cylinder seals — horses and chariots on walled ramparts, reed boats among fish in marshes, winged genii flanking sacred trees, rows of fallen soldiers — giving flat outline figures, repeating scale patterns for water and brickwork, and stamp-like heraldic groups.
