A nomenclature of colors for naturalists : and compendium of useful knowledge for ornithologists.
A standardized color nomenclature compiled by ornithologist Robert Ridgway and published in Boston in 1886, made so that naturalists describing bird and animal plumage would name colors consistently. The plates are grids of hand-painted rectangular swatches with numbered captions in small serif type, giving designers ready palettes of earth browns, ochres, reds and scarlets along with a period vocabulary of color names.
