Nord contre Sud
Jules Verne's Civil War novel Nord contre Sud, issued by J. Hetzel in Paris in 1887 for French readers of the Voyages extraordinaires series, with wood-engraved plates after Léon Benett. The engravings set figures in Florida swamp and river scenery — Spanish moss, water lilies, sailing skiffs, night raids on a plantation — offering dense foliage textures, backlit silhouettes and crowded action groups.
