A Latin philosophy course book by the Jesuit Ignaz Schwarz, printed at Freiburg im Breisgau in 1724 by Franz Xaver Schaal with plates by the Augsburg engravers Gottfried Rogg and Johann Melchior Gutwein, written for students following a two-year cycle of emblematic lectures. The sampled pages are woodcut initial letters filled with white-line foliate scrollwork, dotted grounds and square borders, printed unevenly on laid paper and usable as display capitals, ornament tiles or texture for letterpress-style layouts.
