A French pocket manual of road and bridge engineering by Joseph de Gayffier, issued in Paris by Roret in 1838 for surveyors, contractors and public-works engineers. The plates reproduced here are letterpress estimate tables: ruled columns headed Désignation, Maçonnerie and Métré des aqueducs, with curly braces grouping widths, heights and lengths, and running sums set in small figures, useful as period rule-work, bracket forms and numeric texture.
