Fontana, Francesco, 1580-ca. 1656 · 1646 · Neapoli : ... apud Gaffarum · 66 pictures

A Latin treatise of telescopic and microscopic observations by the Neapolitan lens-maker Francesco Fontana, printed at Naples in 1646 for astronomers and natural philosophers. The plates are copper-engraved disks of the moon and planets, built from stippled craters, radiating hatched rays, grey blotched maria and a shaded crescent terminator, with lettered keys and curved Latin captions running around the rim; useful for circular diagram frames, pitted textures and hand-cut linework.
