Nova iconologia
Cesare Ripa's handbook of personified abstractions, issued at Padua by P. P. Tozzi in 1618 as a reference for painters, poets and makers of devices. Some 322 small woodcuts show standing female figures in wind-blown drapery, each identified by attributes — armillary sphere, lion, crown, flames, small statuette, children at the feet — set in ruled frames between candelabra-and-urn borders that can be lifted as ornament on their own.
