Nova iconologia
Cesare Ripa's Nova iconologia, printed by Pietro Paolo Tozzi in Padua in 1618, is an Italian emblem handbook cataloguing personified virtues, vices, arts and abstractions for painters, poets and decorators. Each entry carries a square woodcut of a standing draped female figure with identifying attributes, flanked by printed borders of flaming urns, candelabra and masks usable as repeatable ornament strips.
