Pietro Bongo's Latin treatise on the mystical meaning of numbers, matching Pythagorean arithmetic to the numbers of scripture, printed at Bergamo by Comino Ventura in 1591 for scholars and clergy. The plates are square woodcut initials in which bold letterforms sit against curling acanthus and bellflower scrolls drawn in fine hatched line, usable as drop caps, monogram frames or repeating foliate borders.
