Los caprichos

Goya, Francisco (1746-1828), Rossetti, Dante Gabriel (1828-1882), Goya, Francisco, 1746-1828 · 1799 · 77 pictures

Los caprichos is Francisco Goya's set of 80 satirical etchings with aquatint, published in Madrid in 1799 and sold to a Spanish public as commentary on superstition, clergy, vanity and folly. Figures emerge from deep aquatint grounds in strong tonal blocks, with captions lettered beneath: witches, donkeys, hooded crowds, grotesque heads, and cloaked silhouettes usable as high-contrast stock figures.
