Marcus Elieser Bloch's twelve-part natural history of fishes, issued by the author in Berlin from 1785 with a parallel French text prepared by J.-Charles Laveaux, sold by subscription to naturalists and collectors. Each hand-coloured copperplate shows a single fish in profile on bare paper, with fins and scale rows engraved in fine parallel lines, plus small inset outlines of cross-sections, heads, or tails.
