Bookbinding : books bequeathed by William Augustus Spencer
A photographic record of fine French leather bookbindings made in Paris around 1880 by trade binders including Emile Mercier, Marius Michel and Victor Champs, from the collection bequeathed by William Augustus Spencer, compiled for librarians, collectors and binders. The 541 plates show whole covers head-on: gilt-tooled borders, corner fleurons, panelled frames and grained morocco, usable as ready-made frames, rules, ornament units and colour pairings.
