Inside Out Library

The birds of America, from drawings made in the United States and their territories. By John James Audubon

Audubon, John James (1785-1851) · 1840 · J.J. Audubon -- J.B. Chevalier · 503 pictures

John James Audubon's octavo edition of The Birds of America, issued in Philadelphia and New York from 1840 by the author with J.B. Chevalier, reduced by lithography from the double-elephant folio for American subscribers buying in parts. Each hand-colored plate places one or two birds on a branch with berries, buds, or leaves against blank paper, with numbered headings above and engraved species names in English and Latin below, giving designers cut-out bird silhouettes, botanical sprigs, and period plate lettering.
