Jacques Fabien Gautier d'Agoty's serial of essays on natural history, physics and painting, issued in Paris by Delaguette in 1752 for subscribers following his experiments in colour printing. The forty details here are close crops of his four-colour mezzotints, showing mottled olive, ochre and red-brown fields, soft tonal gradients and visible plate grain usable as printed textures, muted palettes and aged paper grounds.
