Œuvres complètes de M. le C[om]te de Buffon ... : histoire des animaux quadrupèdes

Buffon, Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de, 1707-1788, John Adams Library (Boston Public Library) BRL, Adams, John, 1735-1826, former owner · 1775 · A Paris : De l'Imprimerie royale · 40 pictures

A volume of Buffon's collected works on quadrupeds, printed at the Imprimerie royale in Paris in 1775 for the learned readers and subscribers of French natural history. The copperplate engravings place single animals—rabbit, hare, hedgehog, squirrel, bats on masonry—on low mounds with hatched skies and ruins behind, giving designers clean animal silhouettes, fur textures built from fine line, and ready-made landscape vignettes.
