Œuvres complètes de M. le C[om]te de Buffon ... : histoire des animaux quadrupèdes

Buffon, Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de, 1707-1788, John Adams Library (Boston Public Library) BRL, Adams, John, 1735-1826, former owner · 1775 · A Paris : De l'Imprimerie royale · 38 pictures

A volume of Buffon's collected works on quadrupeds, issued by the Imprimerie royale in Paris in 1775 for subscribers and learned readers, and once owned by John Adams. The copperplate engravings place single mammals in profile on a rocky ledge before thin landscapes with ruined towers and cloud-streaked skies, giving designers clean animal silhouettes, fine stipple and hatch shading, and detachable foreground rock and foliage motifs.
