Œuvres complètes de M. le C[om]te de Buffon ... : histoire des animaux quadrupèdes

Buffon, Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de, 1707-1788, John Adams Library (Boston Public Library) BRL, Adams, John, 1735-1826, former owner · 1775 · A Paris : De l'Imprimerie royale · 52 pictures

A volume of Buffon's collected works on quadrupeds, issued by the Imprimerie royale in Paris in 1775 for subscribers to his natural history, this copy from John Adams's library. The plates are copper engravings of single animals—monkeys and macaques among them—posed on rocks, stumps and tree limbs against hatched skies and distant landscapes, useful for animal silhouettes, fur texture in line, and framing foliage at plate edges.
