Buffon, Georges Louis Leclerc, comte de, 1707-1788, John Adams Library (Boston Public Library) BRL, Adams, John, 1735-1826, former owner · 1775 · A Paris : De l'Imprimerie royale · 2 pictures

A volume of Buffon's collected works on quadrupeds, printed at the Imprimerie royale in Paris in 1775 for learned subscribers and later owned by John Adams. The pictures scanned here are the binding's marbled endpapers—French curl and shell patterns in rust, ochre, slate blue and cream on absorbent laid paper—useful as period-correct backgrounds, cover papers and texture fills.
