Anton Raphael Mengs's collected writings on the theory of painting, translated from Italian and edited by José Nicolás de Azara, printed in Paris in 1786 for artists, connoisseurs and academies. The plates here are letterpress typographic ornaments: symmetrical foliate tailpieces, acanthus and palmette sprays, heart and strapwork motifs in coarse black woodcut line, usable as section breaks, borders and small device marks.
